Of course you want to buy the healthiest foods for your family, but it can be very difficult to read all the different food labels on every single thing you buy.  For me personally grocery shopping needs to be done "Supermarket Sweep" style (you know that old game show?)...fast.  I'm a girl on a mission with kids in tow and standing around reading every food label I put in my cart is not an option.

And even if I did read every food label that still would not tell me if something was GMO or not, it would still leave me guessing.  Here in the United States genetically modified foods are not labeled as such...but there is a little known trick I learned that guarantees the food I buy for my family is GMO free.

There is an amazing new company out there, the first of its kind that guarantees any product they carry is Non-GMO.  They regulate this very heavily and pledge to never carry GMO products.  This is great news as it takes away all the guess work and label analyzing so that I can feel 100% confident we are consuming only healthy non-GMO foods.  This is a really big deal as there is no other store or company that has this pledge and with all the dangerous health risks associated with GMO foods it's a company I am very glad exists.  I know that my kiddos are getting good clean food that their bodies desperately need to grow into healthy adults.

One other thing I really like about them is I can order right online and have it shipped (for free!) to my doorstep which as a busy working mom saves me a ton of time.  They are also so much cheaper than Wholefoods or the organic section at my grocery.  (Just to give you an idea the Gluten free oatmeal I buy at my local grocery is $5.99 a box, the same oatmeal at this store is $3.04!)  So I save money, time, and know without a shadow of a doubt I am feeding my family Non-GMO foods...can you say Super-Mom!!

Kashi GMO
Grocery shopping could not be more confusing.  You think you are doing the absolute best job you can by reading food labels and carefully selecting the healthiest food for your family.  But what do some of those labels really mean?

A small Rhode Island grocery store recently discovered that Kashi cereal is made primarily of Genetically Modified Round-Up Ready Soybeans, therefore not 100% Natural as it claims to be has sparked public outrage and personally makes me crazy.  I'm sure you've seen the Kashi commercials where the Kashi people are venturing through the forest to find wholesome, fresh, natural ingredients.  Leading consumers to believe their ingredients are as "pure" as nature intended.  It's no wonder we feel cheated and duped.

Food manufacturers are recklessly using sneaky marketing slogans to trick consumers into buying their products using terms like "All Natural".  Unfortunately, there are no laws requiring the labeling of Genetically Modified Ingredients making it really difficult to identify,

What does "All Natural" really mean anyway?   According to a 2010 Hartman Group poll, more than 60 percent of consumers believe that the "natural" label implies or suggests the absence of genetically engineered ingredients.

This is a huge misconception.  In fact, currently there are no rules or regulations for using the label "Natural" and food manufacturers are taking advantage.

Here is the ugly truth behind what's really in Kashi's food:

All Natural GoLean Shakes
 – composed almost entirely of synthetic and unnaturally processed ingredients including sodium molybdate, phytonadione, sodium selenite, magnesium phosphate, niacinamide, calcium carbonate, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine, hydrochloride, thiamin hydrochloride, potassium iodine and more.

All Natural Heart to Heart Waffles - synthetic and unnaturally processed ingredients constitute the primary ingredients. There is more leavening  (combo of sodium bicarbonate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, and monocalcium phosphates) than all Seven Whole Grains and Sesame Flour combined.

All Natural Cereals- All the soy used in Kashi cereals is genetically modified soy. And when tested those grains they found pesticides known as carcinogenics and hormone disruptors.
Organic Logo
When reading food labels and choosing the best foods for your family the only label you can really trust is the USDA Organic label and shop at a place you can really trust.  This is so important because food matters and it's the one thing you have to get right.

I only shop at this store because they pledge to never carry anything GMO and take this very seriously.  This takes out the guess work for me, and I can shop with confidence knowing my kids are eating truly natural foods.  Click here to see for yourself and start shopping!

If you or a family member is Food Sensitive grocery shopping can be difficult.  Constantly having to read food labels is a daunting task especially if you are a busy parent with kids in tow.

There is a new company revolutionizing how we shop for natural, organic, and special dietary foods.  Whatever your food sensitivity; gluten, casein, lactose, dairy, nut, soy, corn, wheat, eggs, yeast.  You can filter by your dietary need and it will automatically refine all product choices by that need.  It's like walking into your grocery store, clicking a button and only seeing the products that you can have...genius!

You can also filter by specific attributes, say you only want products that are BPA or petroleum free, or have no dyes or additives.  So smart!

Definitely check it out, I snagged my free membership a couple of days ago: http://bit.ly/nQqevH

So the main problem is kid's are taught very early that food should be fast and convenient, the second is they are taught that because that is what their parents were taught.  It all boils down to a lack of education.

I think most parents think it's the job of the schools to teach nutrition but what many fail to realize is even if the schools are teaching nutrition it does not automatically lead to a healthy lifestyle.  Healthy children start in the home and MUCH earlier than most think.  Cooking at home, eating together as a family starts at infancy.

One other point about education is people have no idea where their food comes from.  How it got there?  Where did it come from?  How does a hamburger from McDonald's taste the same all over the world from Cali?  Why do baby carrots deceivingly look so small and cute? Be curious, ask questions, read labels.

High Fructose Corn Syrup
First let’s start with what exactly is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)?  Originally it was invented by Japanese researchers as a cheap sweetener for soft drinks.  It’s 6 times sweeter than sucrose (the traditional sugar you use in your home) which makes it very addictive.  Since the 1970’s it has migrated into just about everything you eat because it’s sweet and it’s cheap. Some call this a silent killer, some say it’s not that bad…who’s right?

Well moderation is key in anything you eat and drink.  But if it’s in everything you eat and drink, how do you know how much you are consuming?  This is what makes it extremely dangerous.

As I mentioned before since it is so sweet it makes us addicted to the very foods we should steer clear of.  We crave these foods from the “high” or temporary spike in energy.  This energy quickly fades and so we eat more or drink more without even thinking about it.  Fructose also disables the signals your body gives when you are full and increases your appetite.

It’s also rightfully blamed factor for the rapid rise of obesity and diabetes.  Our children consume alarming amounts of HFCS.  Teenagers gulp soft and energy drinks by the cases, all loaded with this dangerous sweetener.  Is it any wonder why the obesity rate in our kids is the highest it’s ever been?  1 in 3 American Children born after the year 2000 will contract early onset of diabetes, among minorities it’s 1 in 2.

Your liver is not designed to handle large amounts of fructose.  Too much can cause liver dysfunction.

Too much high fructose corn syrup can also cause heart problems because it causes increases your triglyceride levels which can lead to heart disease.  Heart Disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S.

Food for thought.  The U.S.D.A conducted research to see the effects of a high fructose corn syrup diet on lab rats and concluded the life span was reduced from the normal 2 years to just 5 weeks!

Please read food labels before you buy!  I would shout this from the roof tops if I could.

You vote with your dollars.  If you keep buying it, food manufacturers will keep making it, and your grocery store will stock their shelves full of foods that are making you and your children sick.  If you see HFCS or crystalline fructose put it down and find another alternative.

Fast foods are loaded with HFCS so prepare fresh foods in your own kitchen.  There are plenty of “fast” much healthier meals you can prepare at home.  Teach your children the importance of reading food labels and show them how to make healthy meals together as a family, and eat together too!

Here are a few companies that we use in our family because they do not use HFCS:

·  Stonyfield

·   Honest Kid’s Juice

·   Bonne Maman Preserves

·   Nature’s Own Breads

·   Cheerios

·    Annie’s Organics
